Barack Obama's Recent Letter To The GLBT Community

Comments

While the Senator says here he supports extending equal rights and benefits, you'll find on his election web site (look for the HRC questionnaire) his statement opposing extending equal rights to LGBT americans:

"I do not support gay marriage. Marriage has religious and social connotations, and I consider marriage to be between a man and a woman."

Senator Obama does support civil unions, which goes further than other candidates did, under the constitution separate is not equal.

While many issues require compromise to build consensus, equal rights are binary. Either we have equal rights or we don't, this isn't like making concessions on a funding bill.
